AppleWin Apple IIe emulator
Advanced Mac Substitute is an effort by long-time Mac hacker Josh Juran to make it possible to run old Mac OS software (up to Mac OS 6) without a need for an Apple ROM or system software. Virtual emulates the vintage Apple II computer on your Mac. You will be able to play the old games and use the old programs. Many disk images with Apple II programs are available on the web.
AppleWin is the best Apple IIe emulator we have encountered so far to play Apple II and IIe games on a Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista or XP computer.

Play Apple IIe games with the AppleWin emulator on Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7
So, what do you need to do to play Apple II and IIe games (like Lode Runner) on Windows with the AppleWin emulator?
Apple Ii Emulator Mac Os
- Download the AppleWin zip file (AppleWin1.xx.x.x.zip) for Windows
- Copy the contents of the zip file to an empty folder of choice, for example c:AppleWin.
- Create a folder for your Apple IIe games in the AppleWin folder, for example c:AppleWingames.
- Search for and download an Apple IIe game file and copy it to the game folder you've created (AppleWin also supports zip files)
- Start AppleWin with Applewin.exe
- Click on the disk 1 icon to load your game of choice!
- If the game doesn't start automatically, press the apple icon to reboot and start the disk
- Controls are fixed: use the numpad arrows to move, use the alt button to fire
The screen is full of lines!
This is part of the emulation. You can disable this feature:
- Click on the settings icon (joystick and speaker)
- Click on the configuration tab (selected by default)
- Uncheck the 50% Scan lines option
- Click on Ok
I need additional help!
Well, you're in luck! The AppleWin emulator comes with an excellent manual. Just click on the help icon (book with question mark) and browse the contents.
Apple Mac OS 8 was another major overhaul of the OS from the earlier Mac OS 7. It added a new Platinum visual theme, a multi threaded Finder, better virtual memory, and many customization options. 8.5 and later require a PPC CPU. It was followed up by Mac OS 9.
Running MacOS 8 requires a supported Motorola 68K or Power PC based Macintosh (see the compatibility matrix), or one of the following emulators:
Basilisk II - Runs MacOS 7.x-8.1, emulates later color Motorola 68k based Macs.
SheepShaver - Runs MacOS 7.5.2-9.0.4, emulates a Power PC based Macintosh.
